I don't think it affects Paterno because it seemed like he did the right thing, but idk what big name coach would want to come to PSU if athletic officials tried to cover up sexual abuse.

There's a reason this has been under raps within the program for a couple years. The allegations could've come out last November, but didn't. Sandusky is (well, was) a beloved figure at Penn State and essentially created "Linebacker U." This is a huge hit on the program and it was just a matter of time for it all to come out.

Didn't realize it was (at least) 40, though. His wife has known about it for awhile also. Not sure what's been going on with him for the last couple years as far as getting help and whatnot. I'm sure the consequences will be bad, as well as fitting for such a heinous act.

Doesn't everyone who knew including paterno have an obligation to report this to the police not just his ad? I don't see how anyone could say he did the right thing? The right thing was reporting it to the cops.

It would be the decent, human thing to do at the very least

Right. Isn't it also a crime in some states to not report it?

It was all speculation so Joe Pa went to the AD. I see nothing wrong with how he handled it.

Imagine Paterno in the slammer fighting over commissary and crawling through 500 yards of the foulest smelling ****, only to come out clean on the other side

I think Joe Pa initially handled this correctly by going to the AD but after seeing nothing legally being done for an extended period of time, I think he should have went to the police. But who knows, maybe he had his hands tied by the university.

Had his hands tied by the university? What were they going to do? Fire him because he reported sexual abuse? If JoePa knew and didn't say anything, it's on him.

I'm not saying that it's any kind of excuse not to tell the authorities what happened, but I'm just suggesting a possible reason why he may not have gone to that extent.

I think it's 40 counts, not 40 incidents. You can (and will) have several charges for each alleged incident.

And before anyone takes a dive off the stupid cliff, yes, obviously 1 count is enough for an extremely long prison sentence in my books, and that would go for anyone involved in a cover up too.

The incident happened on campus, not in State College. Thus, the "authorities" this would be reported to would be the head of the on-campus police, which is Schultz, the other guy who is being charged. Since Paterno never saw anything himself and was just reporting what he was told by the grad assistant, reporting it to Curley/Schultz was literally the only thing he could really do. That's the reason the DA has gone out of her way to exonerate him.
